Frequently asked questions

What are dynamic UTM parameters?

They are UTM tags whose values are filled in by the ad platform at the moment of the click. Instead of typing a campaign name by hand, you add a placeholder (a macro) and the platform replaces it with the real campaign name, ad ID or placement. One tracking string then works for every ad.

Why does each ad platform use different macros?

Each platform invented its own placeholder format. Google Ads uses ValueTrack parameters like {campaignid}, Meta uses {{campaign.name}}, TikTok uses __CAMPAIGN_NAME__. A macro from one platform does nothing on another — it stays in your URL as plain text. Each builder here only offers the macros its platform documents.

Do I need UTM parameters if auto-tagging is on?

For Google Ads traffic in Google Analytics, auto-tagging (the gclid) is enough and is preferred. For every other platform — Meta, TikTok, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Pinterest, email — UTM parameters are what tell GA4 where a visit came from. Without them, paid traffic often lands in the wrong channel or in “Unassigned”.

Which tracking link tool should I start with?

If GA4 shows a lot of “Unassigned” or wrong channels, start with the channel group checker for GA4. If you are setting up a new account, start with the builder for your ad platform. If you already have many live links, run them through the Bulk UTM Link Checker.

Is my data uploaded when I use these tools?

No. Links are built and checked in your browser. The tools never open your URLs, so nothing is sent to your website or anyone else’s.
